A plumber’s job is not an easy one. It is a rather multifaceted role which involves performing repairs on pipes and fixtures, as well as installations of various types of machines of both household and industrial nature. Their workplaces also vary greatly depending on the client’s requirements. Many of these workplaces feature hazards that can threaten the life of the plumber, and if great care is not exercised and proper precautions are not taken. Some of them hazards can easily cause bodily injury or dangerous diseases to be contracted. Therefore, here are five essential tips to follow if you happen to be a plumber in London. Any one of them may end up saving your life one day, so read carefully.

1. Remain warned about health hazards. Plumbers sometimes have to work in certain industrial environments where chemical dangers are present, and it is a very good idea to prepare for them beforehand. Receiving special training for operating in chemical intensive environments can help greatly. Also, having the chemicals disposed of by the authorities as well as possible before entering the work environment is also recommended.

2. Beware of electrocution. Water and electricity do not go very well together. Working in waterlogged environments with electricity powered machines running is not a good idea, since water in the wrong places can easily cause unwanted short circuits that can lead to serious bodily harm, and can be potentially fatal. In order to avoid it, use only those power tools which are specially designed for operation in presence of water. Metal pipes should be handled with a great deal of caution.

3. Be extra careful in cramped environments. Plumbers often have to work in environments with severe space constraints, and great care should be exercised in these locations. Two problems which can arise upon working in cramped spaces are exhaustion of breathable air and formation of hydrogen sulphide, the latter of which occurs when raw sewage undergoes decay. Make sure that there is a ventilation system wherever you are working in order to ensure a constant supply of fresh air.

4. Wear suitable clothing and carry any tools you may need. In order to prevent slipping on wet floors, make sure you wear boots which offer plenty of traction. Keep your work environment free of congestion and make sure that your tools are functioning perfectly at all ties. Be sure to wear goggles when cutting through pipes, and make sure that your cutting gear are sharpened properly.

5. Be sure to take regular breaks during work. The importance of allowing yourself brief periods of rest during your work can greatly boost your efficiency and make you ready for handling more demanding tasks which would require greater amounts of concentration. The job of a plumber may seem like menial labour, but it requires a great deal of quick thinking and common sense to get stuff done.

In order to ensure your safety and increase your working efficiency, be sure to follow the tips mentioned above. The difference will pleasantly surprise you.
